How to turn your electric grill into a pizza oven, Wow!!!

We bought an indoor/outdoor electric grill a while ago. Honestly, I prefer a charcoal grill most of the time but my wife doesn’t like to mess with the charcoal. She likes the convenience of this one and I do also at times.

We also bought a pizza stone for our oven years ago. One day as I was rummaging around and saw the stone sitting there, I had a really great idea. Or at least I thought so 🙂

I thought, “Hey, I bet that stone will fit on our grill. That thing really heats up, and it would be pretty easy to handle the pizza off and on the grill instead of sliding it around in our oven.

So I tried it.

First you need a pizza stone. If you are going to buy one, make sure it is going to fit on your grill.

Then you need an electric grill. What I like about using the electric grill for this is I don’t turn it on until after I have the stone on.

You don’t want to put a cold stone on to a hot grill or it will crack and be ruined.

You want to put the stone on the grill easily, don’t scratch the non-stick surface of the grill.

Now you just need to put the lid on and turn on the grill. I turn mine up as hot as it will go and let it heat up for at least 20 minutes or so. It takes extra time for the stone to heat up, and that is what you want.

After you know the grill is good and hot, put your pizza on. I am just using a decent frozen pizza here but if you take the time to make your own you’ll end up with a super fantastic pizza.

Here is the pizza going on.

Here is the pizza coming off. I think I cooked it about 15 minutes.

It was really good!

Cooking pizza on the grill outside, is a great alternative to cooking a pizza in the house oven in Summer. That just heats the whole house up. Also, like I said before, it is really easy to handle the pizza off and on the grill. Sometimes doing it in the oven is just more hassle than it is worth.

Next time we make some good homemade pizzas I’ll have to add pictures and some recipes here. That is where this method really works best. I just wanted to get this out here while I was thinking about it and have people have the chance to use it this Summer if they are able.

Hope you find this as useful as I do!!!

thank u so much for your site on how to cook pizza on a electric grill!had no idee, dont have a pizzastone–used regular pizza pan with all the little holes–let grill heat up about 15 min. till light went out,put pan with pizza on and 15 min. later the best pizza.Made my own pizza dough–so not frozen!!!!Will use this over and over, makes life so easyy with temp.outside 98 degree–thanks again, may help someone else ,for summerparties just great!!!!!!!!!

Hey Marlene, you are very welcome!!! I hear you, the heat has been brutal this Summer. This is an excellent way to keep the heat out of your house/kitchen and to be honest I think the pizza might turn out better than when in our oven anyway.

Thank you for making an excellent point I failed to think of originally. You don’t NEED a pizza stone. I just used one because we had one. As long as you are careful with the non-stick grill surface, I don’t see any reason why a regular pan can’t be used as well. Your comment seems to be proof of that!

If you have any unique pizza recipes please send them our way, we’d love to try them!

Hi ! This sounds great for a pizza -fix on these 90 degree days…..Two questions – do you let the frozen pizza thaw out a bit first , or plop it on frozen ? Also, would tin foil work as a base layer between the grill plate and crust ? I have the George Foreman indoor/outdoor – just bought it this week and a ready to experiment !!!!
    Thanks !

Hi Donna!!! Yes, we love it. It’s a great option to hang out on the porch and cook pizza on a hot day instead of heating up your kitchen. For your first question, no. I never let the pizza thaw. Basically you want to follow the directions on the pizza for whatever oven directions they have listed. The grill might get a little hotter than your oven so watch the time. Depends on what kind of grill you have. Question number 2, tin foil would work better than nothing I suppose. We use a pizza stone and that works great. If you don’t have a pizza stone I would think a pizza pan would work well also but I haven’t tried it. You don’t want to set the pizza right on the grill in my opinion. I did that once when I first tried this method and the crust really burned something fierce 🙂 Some people like burnt crust though so I guess that would be up to you. Good luck and please let me know how it turns out!!!

Jawbone here with a Elec Grill/Stone for Pizzas question, to begin I have a Masterbuilt Elec Grill due to use of Oxygen. So I purchased a Weber Stone, one with the metal handles and I’m curious if the stone should go in a Pizza Pan to cook the Pizza or can it sit straight onto the grill?

        • tmanwarrior says:

Hey jawbone!!! Sorry I do not have first hand experience with either of those products but I just took a quick look on the internet. Looks like your grill has a wire rack so I wouldn’t think you would have any problems putting that stone on your grill. As far as the pizza stone goes, as far as I know they are all meant to have the pizza put directly on them. Personally I would not see the point in putting a pan on top of the stone. I like to have a pan ready to slide the pizza off onto when it is done cooking though. Makes it a lot easier to transport to the table. Good luck and please be sure to let us know how it turned out!!!

I’m using the same grill as an outdoor oven. I made 5 aluminum foil balls to fit under my baking dish. I roasted tomatoes last week and today, I baked fig bread pudding. It works great!

Woke up this morning and was thinking pizza and as I have never actually cooked one I thought I would google it to see how it is done. Thanks to your site with every one asking the right questions I will put my little electric bbq together and have a go cooking pizzas for dinner. Here’s a twist for you we are going to buy ready made yiro’s wraps to use as the base to make little pizzas. These should cook between 3 – 7 minutes but will no more once I have tried it. Turns out we own a pizza stone ( who new?) And now I no to put it on at the start up point so as not to scratch the non-stick plate. Might have to go out and buy one of those pizza spatula’s, haha if only to look the part. So many thanks for the advice.

Do you use any wood chips to add smoke flavor?

    • tmanwarrior says:

I have never done that on an electric grill like this. I’m not sure where you would put the wood chips without them being in the way of the pizza. I have done that on a regular charcoal grill though with good results. Thanks for stopping by!!!
